All I ever wanted in my life was to be treated as an individual. I have succeeded, to some extent. At least I'm sure that in the Lord's eyes, I am an individual. I am not a "colored" person, or a "Negro" person, in God's eyes. I am just me! The Lord won't hold it against me that I'm colored because He made me that way! He thinks I am beautiful! And so do I, even with all my wrinkles! I am beautiful! . Bessie Delany
About This Quote

The above quote is from the autobiography of Madge Oberholtzer, a woman who lived in the early 20 th century. She was born into slavery in Kentucky, but escaped to freedom. When she was released from slavery, her master had given her a deed for her freedom. She decided to keep the deed, as it meant that she was free, but the Master told her that without the deed he would have no legal claim on her.

Madge explained that she believed all people should be treated with dignity and respect and so refused to return the deed. Unfortunately for her, this led to a legal dispute between them with Madge held as a slave until she died at only 50 years old only 3 years ago.
